The reasoning behind the project is that fading, yellowing and discoloration are common degradation effects that result from exposure to UV and visible light and oxidizing agents, resulting in the irreversible alteration of the appearance of contemporary artworks. The GRAPHENART project aims to develop innovative, multi-functional graphene-based products (graphene ‘veils’ and inclusions) that provide UV shielding, de-acidification, oxygen and humidity barriers for the protection of old and modern paintings and artworks.
Researchers are planning to create two different solutions: unique membranes produced through the CVD technique, which will be placed directly on artworks, especially when their transparency is required. On the other hand, the development of ‘nano-flakes’ of graphene to be dispersed in paints and varnishes to give them improved resistance to ultraviolet radiation, oxidation and moisture.
The second application may also pave the way for wider use of new protective materials in the much larger market of architectural paints. Researchers will explore the possibilities of collaborating with businesses to commercialize graphene protectors.
